Eddie Griffin's Tell 'Em I Said It: Apparently It Was Funny Even When I Wasn't High

So I'm sitting here rewatching Eddie Griffin's Tell 'Em I Said It.

Not for the first time.

I've seen it before.

The difference is that this time I'm watching it completely sober.

Not because I suddenly turned over a new leaf.

Not because I'm on some spiritual journey.

Not because I attended a seminar called Finding Yourself Through Clear Thinking.

I just happen to not be smoking weed right now and decided to throw the special on again.

And honestly?

This might have been a mistake.

Because now I have no excuses.

I can't blame the weed anymore.

I can't say, "Maybe that joke was only funny because I was high."

Nope.

The evidence is in.

Eddie Griffin is just funny.

Watching it sober is almost like watching a magic trick with the lights turned on and realizing the magician is still pulling it off.

You start noticing things you missed before.

The timing.

The confidence.

The way Eddie attacks a topic like it personally owes him money.

Some comedians carefully approach controversial subjects.

Eddie Griffin runs through the front door like a debt collector.

There are moments during this special where I genuinely forgot I was watching stand-up comedy and started feeling like I was attending a very funny emergency meeting.

The man talks with the energy of somebody who has been holding a microphone hostage for an hour and refuses to negotiate.

And somehow it works.

What stands out the most is that Eddie never sounds scared.

Nowadays a lot of comedians look like they're trying to solve a Rubik's Cube while telling jokes.

They're calculating.

They're measuring every word.

They're checking the wind direction.

Eddie Griffin walks on stage like somebody who already accepted whatever consequences might happen and decided to tell the joke anyway.

That's a rare thing.

The special feels fearless.

Not reckless.

Fearless.

There's a difference.

Even when you disagree with something he says, you're still laughing because he's fully committed to the bit.

No hesitation.

No apology.

No emergency exits.

Just joke after joke after joke.

And watching it sober actually made me appreciate the craftsmanship more.

Unfortunately, it also confirmed something I wasn't prepared to learn.

The weed wasn't making Eddie Griffin funnier.

Eddie Griffin was making the weed funnier.

Final Rating:

Five out of five uncomfortable laughs.

Five out of five moments where you look around the room before laughing.

And five out of five reminders that confidence is still one of the most powerful tools a comedian can have.

I came into this rewatch expecting a comedy special.

Instead, I got a reminder that fearless stand-up still hits differently.

Apparently even when I'm not high.
